Since FlowCanvas's containers own their children, there is no real benefit to using smart pointers for objects, though there is overhead. Instead, just store a pointer to the containing canvas in Items, since it should not be possible for an Item to outlive its containing Canvas anyway. Update plugin data (e.g. port control range) if the plugin is sent to the client after nodes that are instances of it (i.e. more robust plugin state tracking via merging like with objects).
